Martha & The Muffins

Just recently purchased iconic Toronto band, Martha & The Muffin’s debut LP Metro Music. For those who don’t know Martha & The Muffins were a new wave band, started in the late 70s. They had one major hit with “Echo Beach,” which opens this album. If you’ve heard “Echo Beach,” you can probably guess what this record sounds like. The entire record is in the same vein, and while it never hits the catchiness of the lead track, it still a fun record. It has a light touch of punk, and unfortunately a bit too much of a helping of ’80s cheese. Definitely not going to find itself on my… Read More »Martha & The Muffins

Music Monday

A few weeks back, I went to the Blue Fog Review show at Lee’s Palace. Lost recently ended, and Garfunkel and Oates has the perfect ode. Martha & The Vandellas… Oh Ronnettes! Be still my heart… Okay, so there wasn’t much of a theme here… shoot me.

Entire Cities

Hey Entire Cities, Months ago, you were kind enough to put me on the guest list for your vinyl release. I promised to buy the record at a later date (Caroline was just injured, and I was running low on funds), here’s some proof that I eventually did buy it. Yours, Adam On that note, friends, and readers, you should check out Entire Cities at Lansdowne Syndrome tomorrow.

Sex Traffic

Sex Traffic is a two part CBC/BBC coproduction from 2004 starring John Simm1 and Peter Caine2. The show follows some women who are looking to leave Bosnia to make a better life for themselves in London. They end up as sex workers, beaten, bruised, and the lives of their children threatened. John Simm works in London for a charity. He has compassion and wants to stop this. Peter Caine is CEO of a company that provides “police” a la the UN peacekeepers. They even wear blue barrettes. It’s definitely not a fun romp. Scenes of rape, and abuse, and an alumni from Kung Fu: The Legend Continues are all things… Read More »Sex Traffic

Brunch at the Old Nick

Editor’s note: I’m not a connoisseur of brunch, I do enjoy it, but I don’t believe it is the be-all and end-all of food. Thusly, I have only tried a few of Toronto’s brunch venues. For more in depth Brunch-Love, I’d suggest you read my friend Kristin’s blog, Death by Brunch. I woke up on Sunday before Victoria Day, and didn’t want to cook, who would? After a few hours, I realized I was quiet hungry, and I was in the mood for brunch, mmm, brunch. Unfortunately, it was a Sunday on a long weekend, where the hell would I find something that wouldn’t take 12 hours for service? I… Read More »Brunch at the Old Nick

Poutine

I’m drunk. No, I’m not drunk at 9 am on a Friday when this entry will be published. I’m drunk on a Saturday night1 For those who don’t know, I used to have a super power. I was physically unable to get drunk. As much as I drank, it never affected me. That was until I had eight shots of absinthe over 45 minutes, one night. Good times. Thanks Tim. I got buzzed that night. Then a week ago, I went to Clinton’s, I was meeting someone there, she was late, I sat at the bar drinking as I waited and by the time she got there, I was slightly… Read More »Poutine

Thinkin’ Wishful Thoughts, Thinkin’ Wishful Thoughts

Before we went to see Hot Tub Time Machine, we needed to eat. If you’re in the Annex, you’re going to be eating one of two things: Sushi or Sky Blue Sky. It’s kind of ridiculous how many sushi restaurants are in the Annex, but we opted for the Wilco-themed sandwich shop Sky Blue Sky. This was my third visit to the restaurant, the first had me ordering “Hoodoo Voodoo.” The second trip had me securing an order of “Via Chicago.” Of the three, my favourite is still “Hoodoo Voodoo” who’s drippy cheese love and crisp pear was incredible. “Wishful Thinking,” my latest selection is a close second. The meaty… Read More »Thinkin’ Wishful Thoughts, Thinkin’ Wishful Thoughts

Hot Tub Time Machine

I went into this film with some high expectations, but was still skeptical enough to not see it during its initial theatrical run, and instead saw it at Toronto’s Bloor Cinema. What I didn’t expect was to see such perfection. I haven’t laughed so hard at a film in a long time, especially not in a theatre. One joke that literally had me in stitches was such an obvious joke and was even in the trailer, “What colour is Michael Jackson?” but the execution was done so perfectly that it led to such hilarity. For those who don’t remember, the 1980s was the worst decade in all human history. One… Read More »Hot Tub Time Machine
